Biography
John Smyth of North Nibley had two wives called Ann Bromfield. They are different people and should not be merged.
John was the son of John (Smith) Smyth and Mary (Browning) Smith and was baptised on 8 Sep 1611 at North Nibley, Gloucestershire, England. [1]
He was one of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the County of Gloucester and, like his father, was a steward for the Gloucestershire lands of Lord Berkeley.
John married Ann Bromfield on 12 January 1629 in St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey, England.[2] She was the eldest daughter of Sir Edward Bromfield of Suffolk Place, Surrey. John and his wife Anne were given by his father the house called Smallcombe’s Court in North Nibley, which John Smyth the elder had built in 1607. Edward, the eldest son of John and Anne, was born in 1632. John Smyth the younger seems to have lived for a while with Alderman Bromfeild in Southwark, but by 1638 he was living in North Nibley, for his son Thomas was baptised there as were all his subsequent children. [3] John and his first wife had at least ten children:
- Edward
- Anne
- Thomas (1637)
- Margaret (1638)
- Elizabeth (1639)
- John
- William
- James
- Charles (1642)
- Richard (1643)
After the death of his first wife in Dec 1643, he married another Anne Bromfield. She was the youngest daughter of John Bromfield of Udimer, Sussex.[4][5] They had at least six children:
- Arabella (1646)
- George
- Henry
- Robert
- Gabriel (1653)
- John (1658)
Anne died on 21 Mar 1686 aged 72. '[6]
John died on 17 September 1692 and, was buried on 19 September 1962 in North Nibley, Gloucestershire.[7]
A monument in the church at North Nibley records: Here lieth the body of john Smyth, Esq of this parish; who by his two wives that doth lie buried with him had sixteen children and lived to see seventy seven persons lawfully descended from his own body; sixteen of the first, fifty and seven of the second and four of the third generation. He departed this life 17 day of September Anno Dom. 1692, being entered into the 82.[8]
